The Lancaster City Bureau of Police is proactive in contacting people about any stolen property or found property of which we know they are the owner. Whenever lost property is turned in or stolen property is recovered, the owner is sent a letter to their most recent address maintained by PENNDOT with instructions on how to contact the CID Evidence Technicians and arrange a return of their property.
In the letter, it specifies a date by which the owner has to respond before the Bureau would move forward with considering their property abandoned and disposing of it. The Lancaster City Police Department maintains a copy of that letter with the property and attaches it to the report writing system in the event the item is never claimed. Any property left unclaimed for 30+ days is considered abandoned and will be destroyed.
